1.1  FIG member-organisation

L'Union Belge des Géometres-Experts Immobiliers.(UBG)

Association Nationale des Géometres-Experts Immobiliers.
Fédération Royale des Géometres-Experts Indépendants (since 1998 the Confédération Royale des Géomètres-experts CRGE) .


1.3 Relevant factors (1)   Belgium has three official languages - Dutch, French, and German.
(2)   The fiscal cadastre system employs qualified géometres.
(3)   Belgian surveyors may be employed in one of three ways:
  1. as a private surveyor with own office,
  2. as a functionary:
    1. employed by an official agency (state, province, community) or
    2. employed by the cadastre,
  3. in the private sector with engineering offices, industrial firms contractors etc.
(4)   Basic map scales are:
  1. for cadastral maps 1:500 or 1:1000 in urban areas, 1:2500 in rural areas.
  2. for topographic and other maps made by the Institut Géographique National (IGN) at scales of 1: 5 000, 1:10 000, 1: 50 000 , 1:250 000.

(1)   The old state surveying examination is supposed to be abolished from 1995 onwards.

(2)   Two universities (faculty of geography : lantmeten in Gent: géométrologue in Liege ) and eight Hogescholen or Instituts Supérieurs (faculty of construction: survey option) organise four year programmes of study. Student numbers in the final year of studies in session 1994/5 were as shown in the table above.

(3)   A Technician working in geodetic surveying and related fields may qualify as Graduaat Topografie after passing a three year course of day or evening classes.

By Royal decree of the 18th January 1995 a Surveyors Institute was created with the titles with the official titles respectively of

Both professional institutions, the L'Union Belge des Géometres-Experts Immobiliers.(UBG) and the Fédération Royale des Géometres-Experts Indépendants, publish journals.
The learned society, the Association Belge de Photogrammétrie, Télédétection et Cartographie, also publishes a bulletin.
