Rob Mahoney – 1950 to 2025

We are deeply sorry to announce the passing of Rob Mahoney FRICS on 17 January 2025. Rob was a CLGE Vice President from 2007 to 2010.

Rob was a very active delegate and VP. He strongly supported the CLGE Code of Conduct of the European Surveyor. In 2009 he played an essential role in designing the CLGE Strategy 2010, which we still use today. Rob would have almost certainly been elected CLGE President if he hadn’t been appointed Honorary Secretary of RICS during the same year. As a man of principles he was convinced that this could be a conflict of interest and he declined the honour.

Rob was a dear friend and respected colleague whom we remember with great fondness particularly for his support for CLGE, our profession and strengthening our relationship with RICS in the UK. Rob was well known for his innate diplomacy, his love for European culture and language and of course good food and wine.

Rob worked internationally, where his language and technical skills sparked an ongoing interest in land administration and cadastre. He became involved with the International Federation of Surveyors FIG, becoming a central part of the RICS FIG delegation and contributing to the work of Commission 3 (Spatial Information Management) in particular.

After retirement in the mid 2010’s, Rob kept up his professional engagement by chairing the International Land Management Standard (ILMS) Standard Setting Committee. His last official engagement with CLGE was at the launch of ILMS Turkish edition at CLGE General Assembly in Istanbul in October 2019.

The entire CLGE family sends its sincere condolences to Rob’s family. He is survived by his wife Jean, his children, and grandchildren. Our profession has lost a very great professional surveyor, but we were lucky to have had him in our midst in the first place.

Our UK colleagues will publish a full obituary soon which we will share in due course.
