Geodesy is exciting! – meet CLGE Young Surveyors’ Contest Ambassador Dr. Laura Crocetti
Geodesy has a long and continuously evolving history, stretching from ancient land measurements to today’s advanced technologies.
For every surveyor, the sparkle of the profession may come from something different – whether it’s the challenges they face while working in the field, analyzing complex data, contributing to scientific discovery, or applying innovative technologies to real-world issues. This diversity of paths and possibilities is exactly what makes the profession so dynamic and inspiring.
A perfect example of this dynamic and inspiring field is Laura Crocetti, PhD in Space Geodesy from ETH Zurich and a postdoctoral researcher. As the First Prize winner of the 2025 CLGE Young Surveyors’ Contest for her PhD thesis ‘Application of Machine Learning Algorithms for the Detection of Spatio-Temporal Patterns linked to Geophysical Phenomena in GNSS Time Series’, Laura’s journey highlights the opportunities that geodesy offers.
She received the 2025 CLGE Young Surveyors’ Contest prize for her outstanding doctoral thesis, where she applied machine learning algorithms on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data. The main focus was on developing a global troposphere model that has proven useful for various applications.
Winning the first prize was a nice achievement for Laura and showed her that her work is being recognised not only in academia, but also in industry. This motivated her to continue her research, contribute to the field, and remain active in the geodesy community.
The CLGE Young Surveyors’ Contest was a great experience and perfect opportunity to present her research, connect with international peers, and get inspired by the incredibly large geo industry.
Don’t miss the chance to be part of this year’s Contest.
The 14th edition of the CLGE Young Surveyors’ Contest 2026 is now open for applications, inviting young professionals and students (up to 35 years old) from across Europe to showcase their work in geodesy, cadastre, mapping, and geoinformation.
Important Dates:
- Submission Deadline: 13 July 2026, 23:00 CEST
- Announcement of Finalists: 17 August 2026
- Contest Online Finals: 27 August 2026
- Awarding Ceremony: 16 September 2026 at INTERGEO 2026 Munich (DE)
