Pushing the Boundaries of 3D Surveying in Challenging Environments – meet CLGE Young Surveyors’ Contest Ambassador Paweł Trybała
Advancing geomatics in environments where satellite positioning is unavailable requires both high precision and the ability to operate reliably under complex and constrained conditions.
Paweł Trybała, a researcher at the Bruno Kessler Foundation (FBK) and PhD graduate from Wrocław University of Science and Technology, addresses this challenge through his work on 3D surveying of mining environments using SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping).
His research demonstrates that low-cost, LiDAR-based mobile mapping systems can achieve centimetre-level accuracy even in highly complex underground spaces.
Through systematic field campaigns and continuous system refinement, Paweł developed a custom mobile mapping solution that balances performance, accessibility, and transparency. By leveraging open-source technologies and benchmarking against industry standards, his work contributes to making advanced 3D surveying more widely available to both researchers and practitioners.
