Turning Ideas into Impactful Solutions through GIS – meet CLGE Young Surveyors’ Contest Ambassador María Pedrote Sanz

What starts as a simple idea can grow into something truly meaningful – that’s the beauty of geodesy and geospatial sciences. In the case of GIS, it’s often about uncovering hidden patterns and telling stories through data – turning the invisible into insight.

A great example for this is María Pedrote Sanz, GIS Developer and First Prize winner of the 2025 CLGE Young Surveyors’ Contest in the Master and Bachelors’ category. Her award-winning master thesis, ‘Analysis of patterns and tendencies of pickpockets in Madrid’, transformed an unconventional idea into a powerful analytical project with real societal relevance.

Reflecting on her journey, María shares her story, being a reminder that geospatial technologies are not just technical tools – they are instruments for understanding society, improving safety, and creating impact.
